Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly became enthralled when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
